Cozumel has been attracting "visitors" since 1518 when the first Spanish explorers landed here.. only a year later, Cortes' fleet met here and formed up to sail to Veracruz and begin the conquest of Mexico. The "second" discovery of the resort was brought about during World War II when the U.S.A. built an airstrip here from which planes could hunt U-boats.. the Americans spent their off-duty hours snorkeling and diving in the spectacularly clear waters around the reefs; then went home with only praise for the island and its waters.
